I trust birth and each woman's ability to give birth in a way that is both safe and satisfying to her. Giving birth to my own two sons was an extremely positive and empowering experience. With my background, personal and professional experience, I believe that I can be a valuable member of your birth team. I see my role as providing added support, not as a replacement for the mother's partner.
I completed my doula training through Doulas of North America (DONA), the nation's largest certifying organization for doulas. I am also a certified and practicing childbirth educator, having trained with Childbirth Education Association of San Diego.
Prior to labor I am available to provide private or small-group childbirth education classes, as well as assistance with writing a birth plan that meets your wishes, individual needs, and cultural and religious customs. During labor and birth I provide mothers with verbal encouragement, suggestions for position changes to facilitate birth, assistance with various relaxation and breathing techniques, massage, hydrotherapy, and other non-medical comfort measures. After the birth I am available for immediate breastfeeding support and to answer questions about the postpartum period. Once you and your baby have had a chance to get settled at home, I provide the family with a written birth story from my perspective as a doula and am available to discuss any of your questions or concerns about your birth experience.
